When he turned 18, he was a homeless father living from place to place struggling to stay in high school. For those who do not know, all males above age 18 in the U.S. have to register for selective military services. Those registered can be called to serve if there is ever a need for a military draft. There are other penalties for not registering such as not being able to receive federal loans. Women are exempt from these limitations.
